I bought this with the idea that being a Penn, this rod and reel would be a quality combo. The fierce looks nice but it stops there. After one 4 day fishing trip to the coast the finish is faded and lettering has chipped away, even the "made in china" stamped on the side. I rinse my reels in fresh water at the end of each day and gave it a thourogh cleaning once home. It is one year later and i'm ready to head back to the coast, my Shimano's, and Okuma's are ready to go, the Penn sounds like a coffee grinder. after breaking the reel down and cleaning, it is functionable but is no longer smooth as when purchased. I think the lower priced reels are junk and not worthy of the penn name. For the same price range, I would go with the Okuma Avenger. It is around the same price but the quality is far superior. I purchased one at the same time as the Penn and it is as smooth as the day i purchased it. Bottom line, buy a top of the line Penn or something else.

THE REEL IS EXTREMELY NICE...I PURCHASED THE 8000 LARGE REEL.MY ONLY DISSAPOINTMENT WAS THE ROD DESCRIPION WAS VAUGE.AND I GOT A 11ft. SURF ROD INSTEAD OF A BOAT ROD.

i got the 10ft combo with the 8000 reel and the reel retrieve is very fast and smooth. average casting on a heavier line im sure it would fly on a 20lb test line with 2oz sinker. the reel takes a beating but the rod is too weak and has a lot of flex but there is very little feel from the rod. I would recommend finding a smaller rod depending on the type of fishing your doing or use the 10' carefully. Penn still makes great reels!
